BARF for Cats
NEW FELINE DIET
At The Pet Chef in Perth (we deliver to all metro suburbs), we are very pleased to introduce our new menu for cats. Made from ALL natural ingredients, our meals are extremely healthy, and the recipes are based on the famous BARF diet which promotes raw food for our pets. Our dog food range has proved to be a big hit with customers over the last few years, so we felt it was time that we gave our feline friends the option of our nutritious, healthy food which promotes optimum health.
The optimum feline diet needs to include somewhere in the region of 75-80% raw meat, high quality natural fat, 15% bone and offal, and 5% fruit and vegetables. Our feline friends weren’t meant to live on a vegetarian diet as they are designed to be carnivores, and they require animal tissue in their diet to keep healthy. Grains and carbohydrates aren’t natural to a feline diet – they need a high protein diet for optimum health. Due to their convenience, dried cat foods have become very popular, but it isn’t widely known that most of these products contain high levels of carbohydrates and added sugar, which will be converted to fat in your cat’s body. Both of these ingredients play a huge part in the degenerative diseases we see in our pets. Obesity is extremely common in cats and can lead to many health issues – in fact if you can’t feel your cat’s ribs, it is categorized as ‘obese’. Therefore, it is extremely important to make sure you give your cat a carefully prepared diet for supreme health.
The BARF diet, promoted by Dr Billinghurst, states that our pets should eat food that they have been evolutionarily designed to digest, ie. Biologically Appropriate Raw Food. The enzymes in raw foods are what the body needs to function properly – by cooking foods these enzymes are destroyed and this process then puts pressure on the pancreas to produce the proteins needed by the body to function.
A feline diet based on this philosophy should produce many benefits that you will observe in your cat:-
- Healthy skin and coat
- Leaner body mass
- Increased activity
- A happy cat
- Healthier teeth and breath
It is completely natural for cats to eat bones, and their bodies are designed to take its main source of minerals, being calcium and phosphorus, from the consumption of bones. They form a perfectly balanced blend of all the minerals required, in the perfect form for optimal absorption. The Pet Chef feline diet range includes a high percentage of finely ground bone, which makes them perfectly safe for your cats. We also include lots of offal and vegetables which are full of the vital antioxidants, vitamins and essential fatty acids necessary for perfect health. All meals are 100% natural with no artificial additives included. We have a variety of options to choose from including a range of carefully prepared meals, plus a selection of chicken and turkey products for the ultimate variety for your cat. You can collect from our shop in Midland, or, for your convenience, we can deliver anywhere in Perth Metro.
As cats can be very fussy it may not be advisable to try and switch to a raw food diet overnight. Obviously if your cat is happy to switch, go ahead, but if they don’t take to it at first, DO NOT give up. Make the switch gradually by mixing the new diet in with the old and slowly add more raw food over a period of weeks. If your cat has weight issues, it is best to speak to your veterinarian first to avoid the health issues of drastic weight loss.
